What's in the framework

Part A

Trust standard

The four procedures, the words staff hear in every school, how the trust is told, and the trust minimum for staff awareness and practice.

Part B

School annex

One page per school: its buildings, safer spaces, local changes to the standard and sign-off.

Part C

Trust tracker

One row per school: in scope, annex approved, staff briefed, last practice and SIA notification.

Part D

Board sign-off

A summary for trustees, ten questions the board should be able to answer, and the approval record.

Why we made it

In most multi-academy trusts, the trust is the responsible person for every school in scope, but most Martyn's Law guidance is written for a single site. The statutory guidance asks a responsible person with several premises to consider each one and avoid a one-size-fits-all approach. This framework gives the trust one standard and each school its own page.

At standard tier there's no legal requirement to write procedures down, but the guidance says the responsible person should, because compliance is hard to show without a record. For a trust, it's also the clearest way to give the board a picture of every school. Read more in Martyn's Law in a multi-academy trust.

Like our school template, it's free, works whatever alert system you use, and is built only from official guidance.

How to use it

  • Set the trust standard first. Agree the four procedures, the shared wording and how the trust is told.
  • Make it yours. Replace everything in square brackets, and delete the grey guidance boxes when you're done.
  • Ask each school to complete its annex, then approve it for the trust.
  • Keep completed copies restricted. Once filled in, they hold site details, so share them with staff and trustees rather than publishing them.
  • Use the tracker to see where every school stands, and report it to the board.
  • Pair it with the school template. Schools can use our free lockdown, invacuation and evacuation procedures template for the detail on their own site.

Running it with teamSOS

teamSOS Lockdown helps trusts put one emergency response in every school. Pre-set emergency messages go to every school, with room for each school to add its own. The trust is alerted the moment one of its schools has an emergency, and every drill leaves a record. It rolls out across a trust with no extra hardware. See teamSOS for academy trusts.

Fast communication and co-ordination are fundamental to a school's response under Martyn's Law. teamSOS provides that speed and clarity.
